ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

I liveds in London for two years and half. I was au pair. Eh, firstly I was in Bristol in the countryside — Stroud, in Gloucesteshire — and I stayed one month, and I needed to take care of two children, but first of all to do some houseworks, like vacuum, ironing, washing the uniforms of the children, and, then they decided that they didn’t need of an au pair anymore.

[Subject speaks in Italian]: Auguro a tutto il mondo pace e serenità. Ques’anno voglio esaudire i miei buoni propositi che faccio all’inizio di ogni anno e spero che tutti potranno realizzare i loro sogni.

SCHOLARLY COMMENTARY:

The speaker shows some peculiarities, especially in terms of grammar and morphology. For instance, the letter S is added to the past tenses of verbs (liveds) and implied plural nouns (houseworks) that do not require an S. Also note unnecessary prepositions (to “need of”).

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
