Subject moved to Jintan, Jiangsu, when she was a child and grew up speaking the Jintan dialect. She came to live in Suzhou, Jiangsu, seven months before the date of the recording.

OTHER INFLUENCES ON SPEECH:

The subject is an English major at university. She did have a Canadian teacher in high school, and there may have been some intensive pronunciation drilling at this point. (See the commentary below.) She will also have been exposed to some native speakers during her first year at university and also to Putonghua.

Short readings from the analects of Confucius

The subject now goes on to read the following abstracts from the Analects of Confucius in her own Jintanhua dialect. (She did not provide a pinyin transliteration.) A reading in Putonghua (Mandarin) can be heard on the Jiangsu 7 sample.

學而第一 – xué ér dì yī – Xué ér dì yī – Chapter One

A: 1-1:-  子曰: 學而時習之、不亦說乎。

B: yī-yī :-  zǐ yuē: xué ér shí xí zhī, bù yì yuè hū.

D: 2-7:-  Zi You asked what filial piety was. The Master said: Nowadays, providing support for one’s parents is considered filial piety. But dogs and horses can also do this. If there is no respect, what is the difference?

Commentary

A noticeable characteristic in this subject is the very deliberate enunciation of the English words. She has clearly been schooled to eliminate the usual minimal-pair problems and, indeed, there are only occasional traces of these in the recording. However, the overall effect is to give her speech a pleasant staccato effect.
