Subject came to live in Suzhou, Jiangsu, seven months before the date of the recording.

OTHER INFLUENCES ON SPEECH:

The major influences on her speech will have come from her English teachers at school. These were all Chinese nationals, and there is some evidence of pronunciation drilling. She did not leave her hometown until she came to university in Suzhou the year before this recording was made. She is an English major. Since then she will have had some exposure to native speakers and will also have begun to learn Putonghua, but these will not have had enough time to become major influences.

Short readings from the analects of Confucius

The subject now goes on to read the following abstracts from the Analects of Confucius in her own Yanchenghua dialect. (She did not provide a pinyin transliteration.) A reading in Putonghua (Mandarin) can be heard on the Jiangsu 7 sample.

孔子: 论语 – Kǒng zǐ : lún yǔ – Kon zi:leng yu – Confucius: Lun Yu

學而第一 – xué ér dì yī – Xué ér dì yī – Chapter One

A: 1-1:- 子曰: 學而時習之、不亦說乎。

B: yī-yī :- zǐ yuē: xué ér shí xí zhī, bù yì yuè hū.

D: 1-1:- The Master said: Is it not pleasure to learn, and practice what is learned time and again?

D: 2-7:- Zi You asked what filial piety was. The Master said: Nowadays, providing support for one’s parents is considered filial piety. But dogs and horses can also do this. If there is no respect, what is the difference?

Commentary

The subject virtually gallops through the recordings, presumably to display her proficiency. Despite the obvious drilling from her (native Chinese) English teachers, there is evidence – especially in the unscripted piece – of the usual substitution of the /l/, /r/ and /n/ minimal pairs. There is evidence, too, of the problem with the possessive /s/ when preceded by another /s/ sound.
