ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

So I just got back from New York City. Big trip for a guy from, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Then I grew up in Alexandria. So farm, to the city, to the big city of New York. Last night I took an adventure. I felt kind of like a loser because I went from, New, from thirty minutes outside of New York. Took the subway to the big city all alone. Then I to New York’s, went to the Yankees game. Went to check out the Yankees game. And, I, again I was solo, felt kind of like a weirdo sitting alone. So I walked around the stadium a little bit, took in the site. Just to get out and say I had been to New York City. So that’s what I did last night, on my trip from Minneapolis to New York City. So that was a lot of fun.

Um, now when you go to Minneapolis, make sure that you visit three places. You want to visit Uptown, is an option. You want to maybe visit, uh, when your going to the Guthrie, within waking distance First Ave is always fun. There’s a lot going on down there. And Hanathan Avenue’s a lot of fun. Um, walk the river; the river’s pretty cool. And you might make your way over to Target Field, if a Twins game going on, if you’re into sports, maybe not. Um, that’s an option. Um, what else? There’s uh, uh, oh, when you go over to Uptown, you might want to go to Chino Latino if you want to see some, they got a, it’s a pretty cool restaurant. Lake Calhoun’s fun if you’re going, if you’re an active guy and you want to go for a jog. Go around Lake Calhoun for a run, walk, whatever you want to do. Take the sights in, but a lot to do in Minneapolis, all within five minutes of each other, so there’s a few things.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
