ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

Hello. I am from Podgorica, Montenegro, and I am a DJ on Royal Caribbean Company. My passion is driving. I visited, uh, eighteen countries in Europe by car. Uh, four times I drove from my country, Montenegro, to Spain, three thousand and five hundred kilometers. It’s, uh, about five, fifty-five hours, uh, driving. And I was alone. I slept just, uh, two times by three hours in car. I visited, uh, [tisk] North Spain, [tisk] Middle Spain, West Spain, East Spain, and I need to, to visit South Spain, maybe, maybe, maybe next year. I visited France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Albania, Greece, Bosnia, and I don’t know — did I say, did I say Slovenia and Italy? And I applied for this job for Royal Caribbean because I want to visited [visit] more countries, and I want to — I want to meet, uh, a lot [of] people and a lot [of] countries.

[Subject speaks Serbian]: Preporučujem svima da posjetite Crnu Goru. Predivna država, sa lijepim morem i planinama.

[English translation: I recommend all of you to visit Montenegro. Beautiful country, with beautiful sea and mountains.]

SCHOLARLY COMMENTARY:

Although the Montenegrin language is its own dialect of Serbian, this subject told me that he prefers to speak in the original Serbian dialect.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
