So I’m from Holland – also the Netherlands. Like music has always been like, “Oh, I’m just gonna do that!” kinda thing. Uh, but I never — I only knew I was gonna do like composition for film and all that until I was like 16 or 17. My most, my most inspirational memory is like going to a music camp for the first time. When I was like 15; um, that’s like when I didn’t really know what to do yet. I was like, “Oh, yeah, I like drumming,” but I never thought of like as, you know, music as a professional thing. I was also kinda in this like phase where — I don’t know how you were when you were 15 — but I was like this like little asshole puber-puberty kinda douchebag. And my parents were like, “All right, we’re just gonna send you to a music camp like, we don’t, we don’t care if you’re gonna like it or not; like, this is a really cool opportunity; this is the first time they do this kinda thing – you’re just gonna do it.” I was like, “Fuck no, I don’t wanna do this.” And I just went and like that was, like, you know, 180-degree difference from when I got back. It’s like, ’cause it was like one of those camps where you get, uh, together with like 30 musicians and everybody just has to like, form bands and you have to like prepare a show for the end of the week kinda thing. So you’re like forced to communicate and hang out with your band, of course, and like write some — get something going. And from there on it was like, you know, kinda doing that and going to music festivals and seeing a lot of bands live has always been very inspirational for me, yeah. And I feel like there’s a lot of distraction when trying to pursue that, you know? Because there’s like, “Oh yeah, but you gotta write a paper on, um, I don’t know; like, you gotta write a paper on this like one dude from the 1920s and like how he was really good at playing violin kinda thing.” And like, “Why am I writing this paper when I wanna be a better composer?” You know? Like, there’s good things and there’s bad things; like it really helped me; like my writing skills have become top notch here, of course. But there was a lot of writing, and one could wonder if all that writing was necessary kinda thing.
