ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

There’s one café I’d like a lot, ah [laughs], which is in the Temporaire. I don’t know the name of the street, but, ahm, I used to go there a lot to read and just to have coffee and to meet people, meet friends, so I miss that; each time I go to see my parents I take the time to go to the Temporaire. Uh, it’s like the nostalgie, a little nostalgie, but, uh, it’s more than Montreal, and at first I was, I was missing Quebec  a lot to this … I don’t know, to this different feeling, but, no, I don’t miss it that much. I was more country … Lac Saint-Jean … things like that than Quebec.

SCHOLARLY COMMENTARY:

The vocal placement of Quebec French is slightly farther back than the European or Normative French, and may be slightly more nasal in quality.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
