I live in Basel since I was born, and I like to play tennis and drum set in my free time. Um, this summer I go to Italy in a sport resort to play tennis there, my, um, with my whole family; my mother and my sister are there riding, so horse riding, and my father plays tennis too. I, I was born on the Bruderholz and went there to school; then I went to gundelingen in the school and then to here, to the gymnasium kirschgarten, pff, I don’t know; pff, my father’s a lawyer, my mother a secretar[y]; my sister goes to school too.

[Subject speaks in German]: OK, äh, was irgendöpis? OK, äh, nochher gang ich zume kolleg und was weiss ich, denn luegemer vilicht en film oder so oder chilled eifach e bitzeli, jo hüt zobig lueg ich do die präsentation wo do stattfindet, ähm, jo, pff, kei ahnig, äh, zerst han ich nid do ane welle cho, aso zerst hets mi aagschisse dass do wod lehrerin gseit het do jo mir sueche so freiwilligi aber denn han ich denkt wenn ich jetzte an dinere stell wär würd mi, würd mi dass aaschisse wenn sich niemerts melde würd und drum han ich denn gfunde jo ich meld mi doch.

[Translation: OK, um, so just anything? OK, um, afterwards I’m going to friend and I don’t know, watch a movie or just chill out; yes, this evening I’m watching this presentation here; um, yes, pff, I don’t know, um, first I did not want to come here, so I had no motivation as our teacher said that she would be searching volunteers, but then I thought, if I would be in your position I would be annoyed if no one would volunteer, and so I did.]

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
