ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

Um, I’d always wanted to visit America, um, and it’s something on my list of things that, like, I need to see and go to America. I’ve traveled a lot to other places, but America — I never got a chance to get over here for. And then I always had this thought in my head: Oh I’d love to, like, go to an American college and honestly, I wanted to see, like, American parties (you see in the) movies. And, um, I’d already done one uni degree, finished it, never did any study abroad, I’d only traveled … like, for leisure. Um, to do a second degree, and then I was like, getting through it, like this is more specialized for the work I wanted to do. And then I was getting through my degree, and I realized: Shit, my course is nearly finished and I always had this idea in the back of my head, “Hey, I want to study abroad.” So I looked into the program, and I work in entertainment as well, so I know that L.A. there’s a lot of, like, music, booking agents, and the American scene of the music I’m into is growing over here, so I kind of thought, I would hit, like, three, or four birds with one stone by getting over here …

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
