Bio: Paul Meier is a leading figure in the world of stage dialects. He has coached many feature films (see his listing in the Internet Movie Database), hundreds of stage productions, and has taught voice, speech, dialects/accents, and Shakespeare text in many of the most famous drama schools in the USA and his native England; these include the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and the North Carolina School of the Arts.

He is a professor emeritus in the Theatre Department of the University of Kansas. He founded IDEA in 1998 and has been its director and principle contributor of dialect samples, contributing nearly 20 percent of the archive personally. His Accents & Dialects for Stage and Screen is a leading textbook in theatre departments and conservatories around the world. This and his other dialect instruction books, booklets, CDs, eBooks, and services are available at Paul Meier Dialect Services.

To help IDEA’s users better understand phonetics, Paul, in collaboration with IDEA Senior Editor Eric Armstrong, created these free, online, interactive charts of the International Phonetic Alphabet. They are also available as a CD-ROM, as an interactive app for iOS devices, and also for Android devices at this link.
