ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

And, in this interview, I would like to talk about Como. That is the city I’m livin’ in. And Como is not a big, big town, a big city — is more a big town, has I think two thousand and two hundred-thousand inhabitants. And this is by the lake, the famous lake of Como. Er, this is also the place where I was, I was bor- … I was born, and it has beautiful surroundings; and it’s quite a nice place, place to live and to, to, visit, so I strongly recommend visiting Como. And, er, well, I can say people living in Como are quite friendly, and there are good restaurants, so you might enjoy a visit.

[The subject speaks Italian]: Sì la mia squadra preferita è il Milan, la seguo dagli anni Novanta, perché c’era Van Basten, Gullit, Reikard, un sacco di gente molto brava. E adesso mi piace guardarlo solo quando vince però.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
