ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

My favorite colors are orange, blue, and brown, in that order. I love pitbulls! When I was deaf — I was deaf when I was younger, but I didn’t learn sign language until college. Um, I had a surgery when I was 9 so I could get my hearing back, and it was very expensive. In 2009, I was diagnosed with an idiopathic, autoimmune skin disorder, which was basically — I was allergic to friction and heat on my skin. Eleven is my favorite number. I prefer the cold weather over hot weather, so I hate living in L.A. I’ve two sisters; I’ve two nieces; and I am absolutely fascinated by languages. I used to be a piano teacher, but then I stopped to get my musical-theatre degree.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
