ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

Hi, uh, my name is Avi. I was born in, uh, Helena, Montana. Um, I was raised here as well. Uh, haven’t really spent much time outside of the state: a few months here, a few months there.

Uh, I was inspired to submit this, uh, when I saw that there were a few voices for Montana, but no men, so I figured I’d throw my voice in there for a go. Uh, I was inspired to do a submission by watching an old video from a voice actor that I follow, Liam O’Brien, who said that IDEA’s a great way to train up on accents. Um, I haven’t really trained up on any accents, but someday, I might.

Um, besides growing up here, uh, I was also educated here. I got a couple of degrees, work here, uh, done a fair number of different things throughout the state — uh, not very many Montana-type things. You could say a little bit of horseback riding, a few brandings here and there. I haven’t had to help deliver any calves or foals or anything like that. I did work at a goat ranch for a few years, though, which was a fun experience. If it paid better, I’d still be doing it. Anywho, uh, that is my submission. I hope my voice is useful, and I hope you enjoyed listening to it.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
