ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

I was born in High Point, North Carolina, um, in a low-income area, but my family made do. My dad was a handyman. So he did a lot of like odd jobs, and he did janitorial duties, but he always made sure we were very comfortable. And I enjoyed playing outside a lot on his, uh, treehouse that he made for us. Um, I don’t know — my childhood was mostly spent outdoors. And I always liked to play with other kids in the neighborhood. It was a very diverse neighborhood, um, in the 1990s. I was born in 1996. And I moved around a little bit in North Carolina, and now I currently live in Los Angeles for five years.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
