ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:
I love the Pacific Northwest. There isn’t any other place I’d want to live. Uh, I’ve always been very active outdoors: camping, hiking, fishing, bicycling, and all that stuff, and the Northwest provides tremendous amount of that outdoor opportunity. Plus, the, the geology: It, it’s just always been home to me.
Uh, anything on the, uh, east side of the Rockies has too much humidity, so, uh, I like staying over in the Northwest, where you’ve got a nice, uh, range of — you’ve got four seasons; it’s wonderful.
Um, the ocean is nearby. I love and we love going to the ocean, particularly just standing out overlooking the promontories, uh, there. Uh, we like geology. We, uh, travel, camp, in our trailer, and, uh, go on explorations where we can, uh, learn and study a little bit about the geology of the Northwest. But we also like going other places too, but the Northwest is a special place, and, uh, I don’t want to go anywhere else.
Uh, wh-the whole rainforest in the Olympic National Forest is a very special and magical place. It’s almost, uh, it’s Tolkien, uh, in many ways. But one time I was, uh, backpacking in there and a, a group of, a herd of Roosevelt elk: Uh, it was — so it was very quiet hiking in this rainforest, and as a group of Roosevelt elk were, came up and just approached me and the two fellows that I was with, and we just sat there and kind of just communed with them on that level, and that was pretty special. It’s a memory I haven’t gotten rid of.

The archive provides:
- Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
- Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
- Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
- In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech. In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list). The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
