She then lived in Greenwood, South Carolina, for a year before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she lived for about three years.

OTHER INFLUENCES ON SPEECH:

Both parents are from north-central Ohio. Her father was born and raised in Willard and Crestline, Ohio. Her mother was born and raised in Tiffin, Ohio. The subject was primarily raised by her mother. All grandparents grew up in north-central Ohio as well, and she admits that her relatives’ Ohio sound might have influenced her dialect.

ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

So, I was born in Willard, Ohio, which is in Huron County, um, in north-central Ohio. It’s near Norwalk; um, I was born in a, uh, in a hospital in Norwalk, but my whole family lived in Willard, so I didn’t really live in Norwalk, um, in my life. Um, but basically, when I was three, we moved to the South, um, and I’ve basically just lived in the South my whole life, um, mostly in, well, pretty much just in the Carolinas. Yeah, so, I’ve basically moved back and forth from South Carolina to North Carolina my whole life, and, yeah, I’ve lived in, uh, Summerville — ’bout 30 minutes; it’s about 30 minutes from Charleston. Um, and, yeah, I’ve basically just lived here since I was seven, um, and I’m 18 now, so that’s pretty much the majority of my life. Yeah.

My mom, um, has a different kind of accent than mine ’cause she’s from, uh, this town called Tiffin, and she kind of enunciates and stresses her A’s more, um, than mine. So, I may, I may have adopted some of her, uh, speech, um, tendencies. And, uh, so that may have an effect on my recording. Um, but yeah. I’ve always been interested in, uh, speech dialects, so when I found out that I could insert my own, um, accent, I thought, “That’s really cool.” [Subject laughs.] Um, so yeah, I hope this is helpful. Um, and thanks for giving us the opportunity to do this. It’s really cool.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
