ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

I was born in Moscow in 1997. I have been learning English since I was a child, uh, but the understanding that I need to learn English had come only two or maybe three years ago. So, I’m an office worker, and I really want to make English as a part of my job and my life. I think English is one of the greatest instruments for communication between people, and it can help me open the world for myself and give some more information, some more opportunities to make my life better because a lot of information in the world are represented in English, and I think we shouldn’t miss the chance to know more about other people and other countries. So, thank you for your attention.

[Transliteration: Da, ih neskol’ko slov na Russkom: Esche raz menya zovut Andrey, ya iz Moskvi, zdes’ rodilsya, zdes’ zhivu. Aaah, rabotayu v transportnoy kompanii ih khochu sdelat’ angliiskiy aah odnoy iz vazhneishikh chastey, naverno, moey zhizni, poetomu vot ya ego izuchayu. Khozhu byt’ bolee aah, tak skazat’, svobodnym v obschenii, v tom chisle ih zagranitsey ih kak-to nadeyus’, chto udastsya ahh primenit’ znaniya angliiskogo svoi kak v rabote, tak ih v lichnoy zhizni. Ih spasibo vsem za to, chto proslushali etu audio zapis’.

English translation: Yeah, and a few words in Russian: Once again, my name is Andrey. I am from Moscow. I was born and I live here. Aaah, I work in a transport company, and I want to make my English, ah, one of the most important parts of, say, my life, so I’m studying it. I want to be more, ah, so to speak, free in communication, including that with natives, and somehow I hope that I will be able to apply my knowledge of English both in work and in my personal life. And thanks to everyone for listening to this audio recording.]

SCHOLARLY COMMENTARY:

The subject definitely gives an idea of the Russian accent, with vowels of the Russian language giving way to those of English. Stress in a couple of words is in the wrong place, and the nasal “n” sound is reduced at the ends of words. Positively expressed, aspiration seems to be evaluating.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
