ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

My dad, my stepdad: He had animals, which was like pigs, goats, and sheep. So mainly every morning I got up and took them out; other than that, used to do a lot of bicycle riding around the neighborhood with my friends, play sports. I think that’s about it. I was ju-, I was just a very active kid. So, whatever there was to do — I played a lot of video games that I had from one up so, so, yeah, I think that’s about it, growing up. And probably just causing trouble.

I mean my grandma would be like, she will send me to eat; I’ll eat, and then by the time she comes back to look for me, I’ll be missing. I’ll be probably somewhere, climbing some tree, maybe a kinnip tree, a pomserrat tree, and getting scraped, so yeah; and tamarinds, in a tamarind tree picking tamarinds and just sitting, eating them; ’cause she was a babysitter also, so it was kind of — there was a lot of other kids that I grew up with for a couple months. Well, they would be at the babysitter, from maybe like five years growing up, so when I finish pre-school, I’ll go to my grandma’s, primary school; go to my grandma’s — there’d always be babies and other kids there.

Sometimes I imagine myself having the mind that I have now and still being that young and doing those things, to see how it would have worked out. I think I would have been causing a lot of ruckus because, trust me, I’ve learnt a lot over the years. If I probably had an idea how to build a better trap, I’d have probably caught more chickens and more lizards. It was just for fun: um, a piece of bread under a crate with a stick holding it up, and you just wait, and then you yank this bit of string and it drop; but it had, it had to be a very sm-, low; the, the lizard could just crawl under, because by time he, from the time you jerk it, he probably get away if it’s too high. It was the same process of catching the chickens. We never used to eat the chickens or the lizards; we just used to catch them for the fun.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
