ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

Um, I was born and raised, eh, a bit south of Copenhagen, and that’s where I still live today. Um, on Zealand of course, ehh [Sjælland] in Danish. I’ve been playing music for many many years. I’ve played; I’ve been playing piano, uh, since I was 8 years old, uh. I love to improvise. I love to play blues because they improvise, uh, stuff. And I’ve been playing in bands for a couple of years, and we’ve played everything from contemporary rock to, to Beatles songs, to, to everything. Um, also, I’ve been, eh, learning myself to play guitar, and, also I love the pentatonic scales, blues solos. Eh, it gives a special feeling, and it sounds really really good. Um, and, by the way, I’ve also learned to play harmonica by myself, bending notes, uh, just play the blues I don’t know just, I- I like the blues a lot, I think. Um, I also love to ski and … I’ve been skiing since I was about 3 years old, with my parents and my family and once a year, a week a year ‘n, we’ve been traveling to Austria. Um, and now here for the last three years I’ve been travelling with my high school, called gymnasium in Danish, and we’ve been travelling to France, and having a blast, eh, the night life, the friends, meeting new people, everything, it is just, it’s just so good. Um, yeah.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
