ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

So my name is, uh, Joshua Shannon. I, uh, grew up in Newportville, Pennsylvania. It’s like, uh, I guess a part of, uh, Bristol, Pennsylvania. It’s actually in Bristol Township. But, uh, I was born there in Newportville and then eventually moved to, uh, you know, uh, the greater area of Levittown. Uh, I mean Newportville is in Levittown, but it’s, uh, you know, a small pocket of it. Um, I guess I, uh, yeah, you know I started my career as a, a laborer, and then I just moved into, uh, being an electrician, and then from there, um, I guess doing a lot of industrial work, I used to see the programmers program up the, uh, machinery for like conveyors and mixers and whatnot. It’s, um, always something that I wanted to do. So I got myself into programming, and that’s pretty much what I’m doing now, so I’m kind of an automation-controls engineer without a degree. Um, and it’s something I enjoy. I mean, it pays the bills.

Uh, my real passion is acting, and I’m doing voice-overs, so, um, acting of course is my main passion. It’s something I’ve been trying to get into and just doing as much as I can, and, you know, just I guess, you know, it’s, it’s uncomfortable for me, but it’s something I really enjoy, and I, I love it. I mean, you know you can — you know you get a lot of empathy from doing that kind of work and understanding where, you know, other people come from, and, you know, where their — what, what their points of view are. And it’s just something I love to do. Uh, I’m rather green at it, and I’m very new at it, but, uh, you know, I just gotta keep going with it. OK, take care.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
