He began learning English at the age of five at a preparatory school and then continued until 17; he is mostly self-taught. He then attended university (linguistics) and, at the time of this recording, had been learning English there for five years. In addition, he has taken part in international economic forums and communicated with a representatives of foreign countries. His work as a teacher and translator has likely also affected his English pronunciation, “reducing” some sounds that Russians typically exhibit when speaking English.

ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH

My name’s Dmitry. I was born in 1995 in Volsk (Saratov region), which is located on the bank of the Volga River. Actually, I’m a translator, but now I work as a teacher. I have always been obsessed with languages and cultures of other countries, and that’s why I take part in international forums of my country, being a volunteer. It’s a great opportunity to meet people from everywhere, to know about their way of life, to comprehend their life philosophy. Uh, you know, there are a lot of people who want to know more about the language of our country, and the funny thing is that they often start it with swear words in Russian. I have never been abroad, but it’s not for, it’s not for long. Uh, the first worth visiting country for me is Canada. Um, and I think this is accompanied by a desire to see Niagara Falls, hmm, Banff National Park, etc.

[The subject speaks in Russian]: Мне очень интересен ваш сайт, так как он дает возможность узнать о диалектах английского языка, натренировать ухо и помочь определять, с кем ты общаешься, не спрашивая, откуда этот человек. Надеюсь, что эта запись будет кому-то полезна. Спасибо огромное за ваш труд. До свидания!

[English translation: I am very interested in your website, as it provides an opportunity to learn about dialects. It’s also useful for ear training, as it helps you identify whom you’re communicating with without asking where the person is from. Thank you very much for your work. I hope this recording will also be useful to someone. Goodbye!]

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
